REVIEW by Curt Cardwell, Professor of History

For most Americans, anarchy and its practitioners, anarchists, conjure up images of scarved, pony-tailed, trench-coated and camouflaged radicals smashing up those almighty symbols of corporate domination and unctuous consumerism McDonalds and Starbucks in Seattle during the WTO meeting in 2000. In an earlier era, to say anarchist was to think of bombs exploding in Chicago?s Haymarket Square in 1886 or Reds plotting the overthrow of the government in 1919. In this smart and informative documentary, Marc P. Blaise Page challenges our assumptions about a little understood movement in America. Using the life and work of Ammon Hennacy, a lifelong advocate of anarchy, as a backdrop, this film introduces us to the world of American anarchists past and present. Prophets of destruction, priests of disorder, levelers, or practitioners of peace, lovers of humankind, devoted followers of Christ, after viewing the film the answer may not be as clear as one might expect. Although designed to paint anarchy and anarchists in a favorable light, antagonists are nowhere in sight, the film is an able introduction to a complex movement. This has excellent potential as a teaching tool at the college level, particularly in stimulating discussion about alternative views in American society and culture.

Watching “A Peace of the Anarchy” is much like diving into a conversation with a friend who’s been tuning into the pulse of the world, and has a lot to share in a little time. Sit back, listen in, and have your conscience expanded—and your hope as well. The enthusiasm of the film’s creators shows through in its colorful style, rapid pace and surprising range of characters and events. Idealists from across the spectrum will find threads to connect with, activists will energize their imaginations with accounts of creative acts of civil disobedience, and peace-minded Christians may take heart from witnessing a faith lived very differently from the current mainstream. Wherever they’re coming from, travelers on the path to peace will find reminders, in this film, that they’re in good company.
